Gut Check: Listen More >> Stress Less
Have you ever had that “off” feeling in your stomach and couldn’t quite figure out why? Maybe it wasn’t what you ate. Maybe it was a stressful conversation, a packed schedule, or just one of those overwhelming days where everything feels like a lot.
If you’re like most women, you probably noticed it…
and then kept going anyway.
The reality for many of us is that the gut is often the first place stress shows up.
Stress is a whole-body response, but the gut is highly reactive to the brain's "fight-or-flight" reaction, often causing symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or bloating.
Stress & The Gut-Brain Connection Are Real!
There’s a constant line of communication between your brain and your gut, often referred to as the gut-brain connection. When you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally stretched, your body doesn’t just process that mentally. It responds physically, as well. For the gut, this can look like:
Bloating, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation
Changes in digestion
A “tight” or uneasy feeling in your stomach
Your gut doesn’t just react to food, it reacts to life.
The Pattern Many of Us Fall Into
Most of us don’t ignore stress because we want to, but because we’ve told ourselves were too busy, have too many responsibilities, or can just push through like always. We start telling ourselves things like:
“I’m fine, I’ll deal with it later.”
“It’s just a stressful week.”
“I don’t have time to slow down.”
But your body doesn’t operate on delay. When your brain pushes stress aside, your body still processes it. Often times your gut is where that shows up…and it can make it’s way throughout your body if you don’t get ahead of it!
✨ Awareness Changes Everything
You can’t shift what you don’t notice. As you start paying attention to your emotions, and when you feel off, you can begin to see patterns:
Stress building at certain times of day
Specific situations, interactions, or environments
Emotional triggers you hadn’t connected before
That awareness is the first step toward supporting your body in a more intentional way.
✨ Try This Simple “Gut Check”
The next time you sense a stress response, such as your stomach feeling off - instead of ignoring it, try this:
Pause for a moment
Ask yourself: What am I feeling right now?
Think back: Did something just trigger this?
This “Gut Check” is your reality check, revealing what your mind may not have fully acknowledged yet.
Avoidance causes greater harm in the long run. When stress is constantly ignored, your body stays in a more reactive state, leading to long-term chronic health conditions like cardiovascular disease and mental health disorders.
✨ From Reality Check to Response Reset
Fortunately, when you begin to acknowledge your emotions and notice stress, you create opportunities to respond differently:
Taking a breath instead of pushing through
Pausing before the next task
Checking in with how you actually feel
These are examples of simple ways you can begin to reset your vagus nerve - the longest cranial nerve, which runs from your brain to your large intestine. It is the part of your body’s (parasympathetic) nervous system that controls “rest and digest” functions, which are the opposite of “fight or flight” (controlled by the sympathetic nervous system).
Final Thought
We’ve gotten very good at pushing through stress, but the reality is our bodies still keep track of it.
“Listen to your gut” isn’t just a saying, it’s feedback.
And the sooner you stop ignoring the signals, the sooner you can start to make a difference that can ultimately improve your overall quality of life!
